Why You Should Improve Your Posture

You have probably heard how good posture is good for your health, but do you know why that is? Posture is the position you’re in when you are standing, laying down or sitting.

Posture is not something you develop overnight, but rather something that takes years to form. I’m sure you can think of those around you who have bad posture. Maybe they’re hunched over at a desk, driving with their back curled and neck out.

Many of us notice those people around us, but do we know our own posture shortfalls? I’ve noticed my posture is bad while sitting in a chair at work, and driving. It’s taken time to slowly try and improve it. It’s a conscious effort sitting taller and straighter than you feel comfortable.

Keeping good posture helps keep your body in good working order by not putting too much strain on your supportive structures. By standing taller and holding your body up against gravity you can slowly correct bad posture.

Bad posture affects your back and neck

By having bad posture it puts more strain on your neck and back. This can contribute to more headaches and back pain. If you do struggle from headaches and back pain finding small ways of improving your posture may help ease your pain.

Posture impacts internal organs

Bad posture also impacts your digestion. By slouching over you put more strain on your internal organs. This can impact your digestion making acid reflux worse and constipation bad too. This also applies to heartburn. If you have bad heartburn sitting up straight will help relieve pain.

Posture improves mood

Did you know that good posture can actually make you happier? When someone thinks about posture, I’m sure that’s the last thing you’d think about. Our brain and body need two-way communication and if our body isn’t aligned right to send signals, we can be left feeling sad.

Posture improves spinal health

Posture helps improve spine health. Good posture is one of the quickest and easiest ways to keep your spine healthy for the long run. If you stand throughout the day or sit in an office chair most of it, keeping good posture will help. By improving blood flow and keeping your blood vessels and nerves remaining healthy.

How to know if you have good posture:

While sitting your feet should lay flat on the floor, your back straight and shoulders relaxed.

While standing, your knees should be bent slightly.

A good posture tip is to move around frequently about every 30 minutes.

Listen to your body. It is extremely hard to maintain good posture. When your muscles are feeling tired, that probably means it’s time to go for a short walk.

When your joints and bones are in alignment you will notice higher energy levels. Remember that it’s okay to relax every once in a while. Your muscles can get overworked and a good break will give them time to rejuvinate.

Posture tip: You can set reminders on your phone as a check-in throughout the day. Make sure your ears are above your neck and your feet laying flat.

Increased lung capacity.

When slouching, you’re lungs are compressed. When sitting and standing taller, your lungs have more room to expand.

Increased core strength.

As researchers have said, muscular effort is needed to maintain good posture. When holding good posture, your upper back and core are staying activated.

Do you have good posture? I know I need to continue working on mine. Struggling with headaches and feet pain is no fun, especially when posture can help.

All my love
