Whenever I was sick, I always knew exactly who to go to. My grandma Dutson’s house, just down the street. I remember how loving she would be as she said “Let me go make you a lemon fizz, that will help you feel better!” She insisted that anyone in our family have a dose and that would make us feel better in no time. A lemon fizz is the perfect mix of water, lemon juice and honey… and grandma’s secret ingredient!
Grandma Jo’s lemon fizz recipe
Pick your favorite mug and fill it 3/4 way full
Heat the water in the microwave
Add lemon juice and honey to taste
Add a ‘splash’ of baking soda and stir it in (careful not too add too much, or it will overflow and change the flavor)
A lemon fizz is served warm so it’s perfect for a sore throat, or even to sip curled up next to a fire. I feel close to her now when I make it for myself or my family. It brings back all of the moments shared with her, watching her stir it together. Grandma always made her lemon fizz with love. That is one of my favorite things about it. Drinking it, I could feel how much she loved me.
Lemon fizz is not just a drink, it’s a gesture of love. And it has been a gesture of love passed down from our family tree. Generations have enjoyed the healing, and love it has offered.
