I’ve been in a workout funk recently. Getting to the gym is harder than usual after such a long break. I’ve been feeling unmotivated and more hard on myself.
When I start looking in the mirror and talking down on myself that’s when I know it’s time to fix two things; 1-negative self talk 2-going back to the gym and being kind to my body.
For me being kind to my body means a lot of different things. I know I need to start fueling my body instead of eating a bunch of crap. I also know I need to workout at least 3o minutes a day. It’s about being, not getting skinny.
So how important is it really to workout everyday? Let’s get in to it a little more.
There are a bunch of health benefits, but one of the most important is that physical exercise lowers the risk of developing many diseases, such as; cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. And importantly, daily exercise can improve your quality of life.
I’ve always said that I want to live to be 100, but a up and going healthy 100, not a vegetable.
Some benefits of daily exercise:
- You’ll feel better-more energy, better mood and better sleep.
- Smaller risk for heart attack.
- Easier to manage weight.
- Lower blood pressure.
- Have lower cholesterol level.
- Stronger bones, muscles, and joints.
- Fewer chance at falling.
- Easier and faster recovery from illness.
On top of all these amazing health benefits, a healthier state of mind is a major one for me. How often do we talk badly about ourselves or feel really negative? Exercise may block these negative thoughts and distract you from your worries.
Going to the gym with others also gives you more social contact. When you are really missing your friends, hit the gym together! Working out can even change the chemicals in your brain. Some of these chemicals include your endorphines and stress hormones.
How long is recommended though? I used to ask myself this every time. Thinking at least an hour to 2 daily was what I would need. Researchers say at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity should give you all these benefits.
It’s important to remember to not be so hard on yourself. Any physical activity is still better than doing nothing. On days where I don’t feel like going to the gym, I go on a long bike ride. It’s important to not be so hard on yourself or comparing yourself to what others are doing and you aren’t.
Anything is better than none. If that means doing squats between every dish you wash! You can get creative and have fun all while getting in 30 minutes of physical exercise.
You don’t have to start out big. You can start by going on a walk, or parking further away at a grocery store. Anything to get you moving your body will thank you for.
You may need to see your doctor before starting any more intense program. I know my husband has bad knees so if he was to push through the pain anyway, he could cause more serious injuries. Listen to you body and if you’re hurting more or for longer than other times, go see your doctor and get the help your body needs.
What I do to make exercise fun!
I do 3-4 songs daily on just dance. It’s a fun way to break up my day and get my body moving in a more preferred way.
Bike rides are a must for me in the summer. I love exploring around neighborhoods and seeing cool houses. It gets my legs worked out and my dog tired.
Listen to music while doing dishes and dancing. Yes, singing is required while dancing to your favorite songs!
Play games with my nieces and nephews. I tell them I’ll beat them to the door (or wherever we’re going) and let them beat me. It’s a fun way to run without spending a long time.
Daily exercise is not only important for you physically, but also mentally. Whenever I start to feel in a rut I know it’s time to push myself again, and that usually includes going to the gym.
The harsh reality is, you are the only one who can change your life. It’s never too late, but its up to you. If you want a six pack, you have to put in the work behind it. If you want healthier skin, usually diet plays a role in that. Whatever your goals are in life it’s up to you to go out there and achieve them.
It’s always the hardest going to the gym the first two weeks. That’s how long it takes to make a habit. Let’s do this together. The first step is always the hardest, but it does get easier after that.
Sit down and figure out what your working for. What your dreams are and then working out becomes less of a chore and more of a way to reach your dreams.
My goal is to be healthy. I don’t care how much I weigh as long as I look and feel healthy. I want to eat the right things to bring my body the right fuel it needs. I want to look in the mirror and love every part of myself instead of judging it all.
What are your goals in fitness? I’d love to know and help keep each other accountable.
All my love,
Talesha
