10 ways to properly care for yourself when you’re sick

The last few days have really kicked my butt. I randomly got a head cold and was not prepared. As I struggled to decide between pushing my body to keep moving and resting I realized that I do not know enough about caring for it when sick.

I decided to move the first 2 days, but then the third day could not move one small bit. I was exhausted and no amount of sleep took that away. I decided to drink a family tradition of “lemon” fizz to help my sore throat at night.

Lemon fizz is made of hot water, honey, lemon and baking soda. Add as much honey or lemon to taste. This is a natural remedy I’ve been loving, but as I’ve been looking into it, a lot more helpful ones I can share with you all.

We sadly can’t avoid ever being sick. And, once you are sick you can bet it’ll stick around for one or two weeks. That doesn’t mean you have to be miserable though. Here are some helpful ways to make being sick a lot more enjoyable.

1- I always suggest a lemon fizz. If you notice a sore throat coming on, this will help your throat not be so sore.

2- Get enough water in! Staying hydrated is essential in your body healing. You’ll be less tired and water with lemon can help loosen congestion.

3- Get the rest your body needs. Your body needs rest so it can heal.

4- Try nasal sprays. This will help combat being stuffy. Nasal sprays help clear your blocked nasal cavity to allow easy breathing again. This also helps from getting a sinus infection.

5- Ibuprofen is my go-to. For some reason this is the only thing I can take that works. I take two in the morning before work, and then two before bed. This helps get rid of any headache I might have for around 6 hours!

6- Drink warm liquids. I used to hate the thought of ever drinking warm water, but have been loving it recently. It’s soothing and helps ease congestion. You can try warm water, apple juice, or chicken noodle soup!

7- Eat honey! Honey is a life saver for sore throats! Honey helps ease coughs and is great in any tea!

8- Invest in an air humidifier. By adding more moisture to the air it can help ease congestion.

9- Only move when your body is ready. While being active is very important, it’s also important to know the right time to do so. Your body does need the proper rest to be able to heal. Moving is also very important when you are ready for it. For me, it helps the aches and pains go away as well as makes me more motivated to keep moving.

10- Eat healthy. By eating sugar it holds onto and makes the virus worse. Cutting back unnecessary foods will help our body recover quicker.

Being sick doesn’t have to be so miserable. By taking the proper steps to care for your body you’ll be back to your normal self in no time!

What are your must do’s while under the weather? I’d love to bounce ideas off of one another so we all can get feeling better, quicker.

All my love,

Talesha
